Haphetz Hayyim (Cahan (Kahan), Israel Meir)
(1835-1933)
   Lithuanian talmudist and communal leader. He was born in Poland and became one of the leaders of Eastern European Orthodox Jewry. He founded and was the head of a yeshivah in Radin, Lithuania, and was active in Agudat Israel. The name by which he is commonly known derives from his ethical and religious treatise Haphetz Hayyim.
